How To Get "Lucky" in Business
May 20, 2025
What if luck wasn’t something that happened to you… but something you created?
The very idea of "creating luck" used to sound ridiculous to me.
Like carrying a rabbit's foot, knocking on wood, or crossing your fingers.
That's for school kids.
But after working with hundreds of consultants and seeing what separates those who break through from those who stay stuck—I’m convinced:
There IS something to this luck thing.
And luck isn’t magic.
It’s math and mindset.
If you're ready to make your own luck, and LOTS of it...
Here's what I have for you in this issue:
π οΈ How To Get "Lucky" in Business: Hint: it’s not a child's game or magic, and it’s not random.
π οΈ The "Weekly Luck Creator" Checklist: Small, consistent actions that dramatically increase your odds of getting "lucky."
Let’s start with a fascinating experiment.
Psychologist Richard Wiseman wanted to understand why some people seemed to be more "lucky" than others.
He asked a group of volunteers to count the number of photographs in a specific issue of a newspaper.
Most people followed the instructions diligently.
But what the volunteers didn't know was that he'd placed an ad in the paper, and right there on page 2—printed in large letters—was Dr. Wiseman's message:
“Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper.”
π People who considered themselves lucky were far more likely to spot it.
Why?
π Because they weren’t negative, rigid or anxious. They were open, curious, and expecting something good to happen.
Dr. Wiseman and others have proven that our beliefs shape what we notice. And what we notice determines the opportunities we act on.
Here's the deal...
Most “lucky breaks” in business and life come from doing the things most people won’t stick with long enough to see results.
In your consulting and coaching business, it's things like:
β Writing consistently, even when no one’s reading yet
β Showing up online, even when engagement is low
β Launching events, even when seats don’t fill fast
β Making introductions, even when there’s no immediate payoff
Justin Welsh captured this perfectly in a recent article on creating luck. He wrote:
π‘ “The luckiest people aren’t the smartest. They’re the ones who front-load the effort.”
He shared five ways to increase your luck surface area:
-
Read more → to spark unexpected ideas
-
Write more → to put your thinking into the world
-
Build more → to create assets that work while you rest
-
Meet more people → to unlock new opportunities
-
Introduce more people → to become the connector everyone remembers
And I’d add one more:
Believe you’re the kind of person luck finds. β¨
That’s not new-agey woo-woo. It’s how your brain filters opportunity.
If I asked you how many red cars you saw on your last drive to the supermarket, you wouldn't remember.
But if I told you I'd give you $1,000 for each red car you saw and photographed for me on your next drive, I'd bet you a large soda that you'd find a lot of red cars.
We tend to find what we're looking for. And energy flows where focus goes.
Here are five self-talk affirmations to wire this new belief in at the subconscious level:
-
“Opportunities are everywhere. The best ones are easy for me to spot.”
-
“I take fast action and learn as I go. I don’t wait for perfect conditions.”
-
“My consistent effort creates results—even when I can’t see them yet.”
-
“I create value by helping others win. That value always finds its way back to me.”
-
“Every day, I create something valuable. I don’t need permission to start.”
You don’t have to repeat these in the mirror (though it wouldn’t hurt).
Just act like they’re true.
Eventually, the universal committee on luck, chaired by Time, Fate, and Circumstance, will have a meeting and say, "It's time you got lucky."
Want to feel luckier this year? β¨
Start acting like someone who gets lucky all the time.
π Keep showing up.
π Keep creating.
π Keep connecting.
Eventually, the math and the mindset collide.
And when they do, people will call you “lucky.” π
But you’ll know better.
