We're in the home stretch in our series on the 8-step Client Value Journey.
Last week we mastered Step 5: Excite—turning new clients into raving fans within the first 48 hours through systematic early wins and confidence building.
That brings us to Step 6: Ascend.
This is where good consultants separate from great ones. Where your client relationship either plateaus at a single project or evolves into a transformational partnership worth hundreds of thousands.
Too many consultants and coaches think there job is to work themselves out of a job so their clients no longer need them.
But that's mistake.
The cost of getting this wrong is staggering. That delighted client who just paid you $25K walks away forever, taking their $200K+ lifetime value with them. Meanwhile, you're back to cold outreach, burning through your profit margins trying to replace what you just lost.
By the end of this issue, you'll have a systematic approach that transforms single-project clients into multi-year partnerships—without feeling pushy or salesy.

What Ascend Really Means
Ascend means guiding satisfied clients up a natural progression of increasingly valuable transformations.
💭 Reality Check: Think about your last five completed projects. How many clients asked you to help with additional challenges? If the answer is less than 80%, you're leaving millions on the table.
Real ascension happens when three elements align: proven results, expanded vision, and natural progression.
The 75% Sweet Spot
Most consultants wait until project completion to discuss next steps. That's too late.
The optimal moment is when you're 75% through delivering current results and the client can see the transformation happening.
The Script:
"[Name], I'm seeing the results we expected. You're already 40% ahead of where most companies are at this stage. Based on what I'm observing, there are two additional areas where we could create similar breakthroughs. Would you like me to share what I'm seeing?"
The Three-Horizon Framework

The Ascension Conversation
Instead of pitching something new, facilitate discovery of what's possible:
Phase 1: Celebrate current results (5 minutes)
Phase 2: "Given these results, what's now possible?" (10 minutes)
Phase 3: "What gaps do you see?" (10 minutes)
Phase 4: "Would you like me to share how we could approach this?" (5 minutes)
Let them identify the vision and obstacles. You just bridge their stated needs.
The Four Ascension Killers
❌ The Immediate Pitch:
Suggesting next steps before they've experienced current results
❌ The Service Menu:
Presenting a catalog instead of focusing on their next transformation
❌ The Completion Rush:
Waiting until the final meeting instead of peak satisfaction
❌ The Assumption Close:
Assuming they see opportunities instead of guiding discovery
The Investment Bridge
❌ Wrong: "$25K got you this. $100K gets you that."
✅ Right: "You invested $25K and achieved $200K in value. The next transformation has $500K potential. What investment feels appropriate for that return?"
The Ascension Secret
Here's what separates $2M+ consultants from those stuck at $200K:
They understand that ascension is about client vision expansion, not service expansion.
Your job isn't to sell them more services. It's to help them see possibilities they couldn't see before working with you, then become the trusted guide for that expanded journey. A journey that lasts for as long as they own the business.
