AI isn’t coming for you...
Mar 16, 2026
Turn your decades of expertise into a premium consulting practice built around the life you want.
Issue #11 — March 17, 2026
When you do something long enough, patterns start to emerge.
I've been consulting for decades now and I'm always looking over the horizon for what's next for our industry.
There are big changes afoot.
I’ve been doing a lot of listening lately. Smart people in the AI space. Research papers. Town halls. Conversations with people I trust. Not mind-numbing click bait you scroll past every day. The more useful kind… where someone takes their time with the data and then tells you what they actually think.
And I kept noticing something. Not in what they were saying but in what they weren’t.
Here’s what that has to do with you…
-
Why the AI threat most experienced consultants are watching for isn’t the real one
-
What your generation built that the next generation won’t get to build, at least not the same way
-
What that means for your consulting practice in this season of life
The conversation about AI and your consulting practice almost always starts in the same place.
Will clients still need what I offer?
Is my expertise positioned for what’s coming, or for what was?
Am I building something durable, or watching it quietly die out?
Those are real questions. I take them seriously.
But the real fear isn’t losing clients. It’s waking up one morning and finding yourself irrelevant.
No notice or announcement. Just a pipeline that turns into a trickle. A client that doesn’t renew. A “let's kick this off” call that never comes.
One signal that confirms this comes from the job market and a Federal Reserve study released this year. Among companies already using AI tools, only 1% laid off workers because of AI. But 12% hired fewer.
Nobody writes that headline: “Company does not hire 3,000 people it would have hired.”
That story doesn’t run.
Here’s what I’ve started to realize… that story that doesn't get printed isn't for you. It’s for the generation behind you.
The door isn’t closing on you, it’s closing behind you.
Think about how you built what you know. You started somewhere near the bottom. The white-collar equivalent of cleaning out the horse stalls.
You did the dirty work...the work that felt small. You ran the numbers, wrote the first drafts, sat in on the meetings where more experienced people made calls you didn’t fully understand yet.
And over time… slowly, through repetition and failure and small wins that cost you something to earn… you developed an instinct. A feel for what’s off before you can say why. A pattern recognition that doesn’t come from reading about something. It only comes from doing it for years.
That’s the whole thing.
Revelio Labs found that entry-level job postings in the United States are down 35% since 2023. Stanford researchers tracked the payroll records and found that early-career workers in AI-exposed roles have seen a 16% relative employment decline while experienced workers have held steady.
Companies aren’t just posting fewer jobs. They’re stripping the trainable tasks out of the roles they fill. The job is being redesigned around AI before a human ever applies.
One researcher put it plainly: we underestimated how important beginner-level work was as a pathway to long-term expertise.
Think about it this way… the repetitions that built your judgment aren’t available the same way anymore. The slow accumulation of decisions with real stakes. The clients who pushed back. The proposals that didn’t land. The mistakes you made when the consequences were survivable. That path is closing. Not dramatically. Not loudly, but quietly. One job posting at a time.
Pattern recognition doesn’t announce itself. It just shows up one day as a quiet knowing...or maybe a slap in the face.
That’s how this landed for me. Not from a single article. Not from one piece of research. From listening, noticing, and connecting. The same process I use when I walk into a client engagement and something feels off before I’ve asked a single question. The same thing your experience does, probably without your noticing it… processing what’s in front of me and arriving somewhere true before the data confirms it.
And what feels true is this: what you built over 20, 25, 30 years is becoming rare in a way it has never been before. Not because the demand for your expertise is shrinking. Because the pipeline that produced people like you is shutting down.
Your gray hair is the last product of a system that’s closing.
Scarcity is what the market rewards… but only when it can find you. Only when it understands what you offer and why no one else offers the same thing. Only when you’ve stopped describing yourself in language so broad that a prospect can’t tell the difference between you and the next person in their inbox.
The window that exists right now… where your experience is rare and the demand for it is growing and the competition hasn’t fully caught up… it won’t stay open forever.

On April 2nd at 1:00 PM ET, I’m hosting a free live webinar: How to Package Your Decades of Experience Into a Specific, Premium Consulting Practice That AI Cannot Replicate and the Right Clients Will Pay Top Dollar For.
One hour. I’ll walk through the three forces converging right now that are creating the biggest opportunity for experienced professionals in modern history. I’ll show you where that opportunity lives and why experienced consultants have a structural advantage that won’t last. And I’ll walk through the 4-step framework that takes what you’ve built and turns it into a positioned, premium practice the right clients can find and pay what it’s worth.
